Interview with Dr. Maryam Zamani on skincare, beauty and being an entrepreneur

Dr. Maryam Zamani is an American trained and Board Certified Ophthalmologist who holds licenses to practice medicine in the both the UK and the USA. She completed her undergraduate degree at Georgetown and medical doctorate and Ophthalmology training at the George Washington School of Medicine. It was here in D.C we met and became very close friends for life. After relocating to the UK, she completed higher sub-specialty training in Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Surgery and is now working as an Oculoplastic Surgeon and Aesthetic Doctor at the Cadogan Clinic.. If that was not enough, Dr. Zamani created MZ Skin a luxury skincare range that creates a hybrid between performance driven ingredients blending potent anti-agers and proven science with sumptuous textures that are the most effective I have tried on the market. I don't say this as someone who has been a friend her long time, ( one thing she doesn't need is the extra press) but Maryam is someone I have seen succeed at everything she puts her mind to. From learning a language, to taking a painting class and creating something absolutely beautiful. She is one of the friends I admire most for her dedication, her discipline and someone who continues to accomplish all her goals.
She is a regular contributor as a surgical and nonsurgical beauty expert in: Harpers Bazaar, Tatler, Vogue, Stylist, InStyle, Marie-Claire, Women's Health,Sunday Times Style, Evening Standard, Daily Mail, , Financial Times Life and Style, Sunday Telegraph Stella, Daily Express, Style.com and today on Ninu Nina!.

Your greatest inspirations and/or influences?

I think I find inspiration from so many places. Of course, I think my work ethic comes from my parents, whom always worked so hard and somehow balanced that with an incredibly nurturing family life. Sometimes I wonder how my mother did it all without all the modern conveniences I have now. I also am greatly inspired by friends, colleagues and visionaries in a number of different industries. I look to them to share experiences and for growth. And of course, my children inspire me everyday to be the best I can be for them.

Challenges of your industry?

Every industry has its own challenges. Now that I am older, I feel that in certain ‘old school’ environments, sometimes my views can be dismissed. Overall, I feel as a working mother, or can be the challenge to be a good mother, wife, friend, surgeon, entrepreneur and have a little down time for myself. The juggle can be real as can the difficulty between going to a football game versus an important meeting.

I know you must get asked this all the times but if you had to reveal 3 top tips for skincare what would they be?

I think always to Reveal, Enhance & Protect your skin at every age. Firstly, washing and preparing the skin is imperative to have better efficacy of topical treatments you use. Biweekly exfoliation helps remove dead skin, debris and pollution that can sit in skin, making it look lack lustre and dull. Actives such as the antioxidant Vitamin C can help protect against uv damage and promote collagen synthesis. Retinol too boosts collagen production, improves skin texture & density and helps diminish pigmentation. Of course we can not forget sunscreen, the ultimate skin protector. As we get older, the production of collagen slows down so using stronger concentrations of specific ingredients can help bolster skin health.

Why did you create MZ SKIN?

I created MZ Skin because I felt there were no doctor endorsed/created by a woman doctor with the needs of a woman met. Most of these brands are androgynous and feel like ‘treatments’ rather than incorporating the sensory component. I wanted to fuse the two. A capsule collection of highly active ingredients that work together in synergy to promote beautiful radiant skin combined with a soothing sensory experience. A complete package. I also wanted a clean product line, environmentally conscious, that was simple to use and effective.

3 things you can't live without?

  1. My babies ... they are the light of my life

  2. Exercising: for my mental health

  3. Almond butter
