SHE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE FLOUR SHOP
“C.R.E.A.M- Cake Rules Everything Around Me”- Welcome to the colorful and funky world of cake extraordinaire Amirah Kassem.
Brooklyn based baker, Amirah Kassem, is young at heart. When she’s not making Wu-Tang shaped cakes or baking Stella McCartney inspired treats, you can find her dancing in her Disney-themed kitchen, eating ice cream for breakfast no less.
Her trompe-l'œil cake burger and fries creations—no fondant allowed!—have caught the attention of Vogue, Nylon, and every fashion-minded party in New York. She's even collaborated with the Wu Tang Clan on a collection of desserts that have been photographed and exhibited, ( I read they found her on instagram).
How did she begin?
Amirah learned to bake from an early age from her mom in Mexico. She studied in New York and began her career in fashion, eventually becoming GM at BLK DNM. In this time she began making cake balls for her friends and the word just spread rapidly - soon enough people were coming in to BLK DNM asking for the " cake girl".
She left fashion and opened Flour Shop and ever since her fashion contacts have become her #1 clients. She’s definitely not just another baker in the city making cupcakes- taste and quality are always number one factors for Amirah which is why she never uses fondant. She openly admits her cakes might not look perfect but that's why they're original creations and edible pieces of art.
I love this great interview from The New Potato:
What’s your spot for Sunday brunch?
I’m not a huge fan of brunch in the city. I think the best brunch is served at home! NYC is too crowded to enjoy a relaxing Sunday, but if i had to choose, I’d say Clinton Street Baking Company, Balaboosta and Lodge.
The best spot for people watching…
Dylan’s Candy Shop – there’s nothing better than seeing a kid in a candy store!
The place to go when you’re in the mood for a scene…
In the culinary scene – Lincoln. Not only is the food amazing, but they have nothing to hide. You get to see every detail of your food being made in their all-glass kitchen. Almost every time I go there I see tables full of top chefs, and that’s not only an amazing scene but a great sign of incredible food!
The restaurant you go to for the atmosphere…
Tacombi! It makes me feel at home. Not just the music and the decor, but more so the authentic beverages, esquites and the tacos.
What are your favorite dinner spots?
Ruby’s, ilili, Osteria Morini, ABC Kitchen, Fette Sau, Del Posto, The NoMad, Parm, Epistrophy, DuMont, and Rubirosa
A hidden food gem that won’t stay hidden for long…
Eataly – I know that’s not a hidden gem at all, but they have one of the best hidden gems in their rotisserie section! They have a Prime Rib Sandwich that’s literally only meat, olive oil, and fresh ground pepper. It’s insanely amazing!
