Inside the Creative Cosmos: A Conversation with Leila, Founder of Ninu Nina
Leila is the founder of Ninu Nina, a platform initially conceived as a hobby to champion the creativity of her talented creative friends. It has since evolved into a curated galaxy of content and eclectic interviews. Inspired by the 70s comedy show "Mork & Mindy," the name "Ninu Nina" reflects her whimsical approach to the platform, aiming to infuse an element of fun and personality into her interviews and posts.
I want to learn more about people from a personal angle. I like to discuss their wellbeing and inspirations. I also think its important to understand a person, particularly a creative, on their process, from mapping out an idea to the point they know their work is complete! I am not going to ask the same questions as everyone else.
Leila prefers to characterize the platform as a small community. She seeks to showcase diverse perspectives and share strong visuals, akin to MTV's iconic slogan "you hear it first," with a focus on early-career creatives and individuals driving positive change in the world of art and culture.
Leila's inspirations range from a love of music spanning various genres to a deep appreciation for nature and renowned artists. Her background in fashion, influenced by the styles of the 80s and 90s, has shaped her affinity for brands that combine art and fashion while prioritizing ethical craftsmanship and sustainability.
Reflecting on her past aspirations to become a music video director, Leila draws inspiration from iconic directors such as Mark Romaneck, Anton Corbjn, and Floria Sigismondi and advises aspiring filmmakers to persevere despite the challenges of breaking into the industry. “ I tried so many times to break into film, and I am proud of my experiences particularly in production, even if they are films that are probably the worst rated on Rotten Tomatoes”.
In discussing fashion, Leila celebrates New York City's vibrant street style and cites fashion icons such as stylist Camilla Nickerson, and Patricia Field as major inspirations. “ I love small brands that focus on craftsmanship, I adore Magnetic Midnight, Sarah’s Bag from Beirut, Paula Mendoza jewelry, and my friend Kimberly’s brand Jade Tribe. I think it’s really important like with everything else in life not to take things too seriously. I am always happy wearing a good pair of jeans and a T-shirt, fashion should be fun and timeless”.
When talking about the future of Ninu Nina, Leila shares “ I don’t see myself monetizing the site because that would change the content and my ideas of what I find interesting”. I don’t want to ever feel forced to post an interview on someone because I have to. As for the readers, I just want them to find me because that’s the stuff they like to read about and explore. Eventually, I’d love to have some contributing editors who share their inspirations from all over the world.”
