Ilona Szalay: Only Lovers Left Alive
This summer I got the chance to visit Ilona Szalay’s gorgeous solo exhibition “ Only Lovers Left Alive” at Arusha Gallery in London.
Ilona Szalay, born in Beirut in 1975, is an accomplished artist known for her evocative and poetic visual language. She completed a degree in English Literature at the University of Oxford in 1997, which perhaps influences the narrative and dialectical techniques in her work. Szalay furthered her studies at Central St Martins (Byam Shaw School of Art), earning an MFA in 2002.
Szalay's work explores the tension between power and vulnerability, dominance and submission, using a variety of media including canvas, tracing paper, LED light, and glass. Her pieces are characterized by heavy, looping strokes and soft lines that create a delicate balance, inviting viewers into a nuanced dialogue with the subjects she portrays. Her art has been recognized with several honors, including the ORA Contemporary Art Prize in Italy and being a finalist for the prestigious Threadneedle Prize in the UK. Szalay's exhibitions have spanned prominent venues such as the Royal Academy, the British Painter’s Association, and the Barbican, with her work showcased in cities like Milan, London, Miami, Basel, Rome, Zurich, Toronto, and New York.
Szalay's approach to art is rooted in exploring the liminal spaces between contrasting forces, allowing her work to resonate on both collective and individual levels. Through her restrained and intuitive techniques, she engages viewers in a reflective experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional visual arts.
