Theodoros Bafitos: Capturing Architecture Through a Photographer's Lens

Theodoros Bafitos: Capturing Architecture Through a Photographer's Lens

Theodoros Bafitos' journey into the world of photography began with a childhood fascination sparked by his father's love for capturing moments through a lens. This early exposure laid the groundwork for his future passion, which would later evolve into a specialization in architectural photography.

His formal foray into photography coincided with his university studies, where he immersed himself in the world of architecture. Delving into 3D design software like SketchUp and 3ds Max, Theo spent countless hours perfecting virtual views of his architectural projects. It was during this time that he honed his skills in composition and presentation, skills that would prove invaluable in his photographic career.

"I treated each architectural project as if it were my own creation," Theo recalls. "Positioning cameras virtually and manipulating light and angles became second nature to me."

His transition from virtual to real-world photography was seamless. Armed with his first digital camera in the early 2000s, Theo began capturing architectural marvels both near his home in Beirut and during his travels. The rise of social media platforms further fueled his passion, providing a platform to share his unique perspective on buildings and architectural design. To refine his craft, Theo sought formal training at "Dar al Mussawir," a renowned photography club in Beirut. Here, he deepened his understanding of camera settings and techniques, complementing his self-taught approach with structured learning. Additionally, he turned to online tutorials, devouring content that expanded his repertoire of photographic styles and methods.

"My creative process mirrors my architectural background," Theo explains. "I approach each building as if I'm designing it, seeking angles that highlight its form and character."

Before embarking on a photography session, Theo meticulously researches notable architectural landmarks in the area. This preparation allows him to identify unique perspectives and details that might otherwise go unnoticed. During shoots, he strives to capture the interplay of light and materials, aiming to convey the essence and scale of each architectural masterpiece.

"I believe that including people in my photos adds a human element," Theo remarks. "It not only provides scale but also creates a connection between the viewer and the space."

Greatest Inspirations or influences?

My greatest influences for photography come from my childhood experiences. My dad had the same hobby, and I was always amazed by how capturing specific moments by cameras were translated into tangible photos. I loved opening the albums cabinet in our bedroom and looking through the photos he had taken. This early fascination with photography stayed with me and laid the foundation for my future pursuits.

As I became an architect and focused more on buildings and projects, I began to draw inspiration from the architectural wonders around me.

Tell us about a favorite location.

Definitely the “Louvre Museum” in Abu Dhabi, is the most mesmerizing location I've shot. This architectural masterpiece combines everything I love in architecture: concept, scale, materials, location, and the emotions it evokes. During a workshop with "Beautiful Destinations," we had exclusive access to the museum, allowing us to capture its beauty without the usual crowds. This unique experience allowed me to appreciate and document the intricate details of this place.

Theo's portfolio reflects his passion for architecture and his dedication to capturing its beauty through photography. His work not only celebrates the structural integrity of buildings but also invites viewers to appreciate the artistry behind each design.
