Britt Michaelian The Healing Artist
A Journey into the Artistic Realm of Britt Michaelian
In Southern California resides an artist whose canvases are not mere compositions of color and form but vessels of healing energy. Britt Michaelian shares her artistic journey — a profound odyssey that seamlessly weaves through the realms of art, therapy, and the profound connection between creativity and healing.
A Fusion of Art and Healing Education
Britt's artistic roots trace back to the illustrious halls of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she honed her craft and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). However, her journey was not confined to the conventional bounds of artistic expression. Britt pursued a dual master's path, delving into the realms of art therapy and marriage and family therapy. Armed with a unique fusion of artistic prowess and therapeutic insight, she embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between creativity and emotional well-being.
Mastering the Art of Healing Energies
Britt's commitment to healing extends beyond traditional therapeutic practices. As a Reiki master in both Usui and Karuna Reiki, she delves into the profound world of energy healing. Her expertise in various healing modalities becomes a cornerstone in her artistic endeavors, transforming her creations into conduits of healing energy.
The Canvas as a Portal to Healing
For Britt, the purpose of art goes beyond aesthetics; it becomes a tangible source of healing. Each piece she creates is not merely a visual composition but a profound transmission of healing energy. Her art is a testament to the belief that creativity possesses the power to heal, inspire, and transform.
To ensure that the benefits of her art reach collectors on a deeper level, Britt introduces a unique practice. Every piece comes with an accompanying energy healing session, where she guides collectors on finding entry points to their healing practices through the artwork. In a world where meditation is embraced but not universally comfortable for everyone, Britt's art provides a sanctuary for those who prefer to meditate with open eyes.
From Art School to Healing Hospital Rooms
Britt's journey takes an impactful turn as she transcends the boundaries of art school and steps into the hospital corridors. Initially apprehensive about working with patients facing the imminent specter of death, she found solace in the therapeutic power of art. In the heart transplant, pediatrics, and oncology units, art became a refuge for patients seeking an escape from the harsh realities of their medical conditions.
Clinical procedures or medical diagnoses did not mark her presence in these hospital spaces. Instead, Britt approached her role with an open heart, armed with a cart full of art supplies — markers, pens, and Model Magic. She was there to listen, to offer a creative sanctuary, and most importantly, to help patients heal their hearts through the medium of art.
A Turning Point in Healing: A Personal Journey
The true revelation of the healing potential of her art unfolded during a poignant chapter in Britt's life — the loss of her mother and her sister's battle with cancer. Armed with a foundational understanding of Reiki, Britt embraced the role of a healer in her family's time of need. As she laid her hands on her sister's back, where pain-ridden tumors strained against her rib, a profound connection between healing touch and artistic expression emerged.
In moments of respite, when her sister found solace in sleep, Britt turned to her canvas. Emerging from a prolonged hiatus from art-making, her creations took on a new dimension. No longer were they confined to the realm of intuitive colors on canvas; they became conduits of healing, capable of soothing pain and offering solace.
Your work incorporates powdered minerals, soil from energy vortexes, healing frequencies, sacred geometry, and quantum healing. Aside from your aim to create energy healing with these elements, how do they influence the painting itself?
It is so cool how the paint mixes with the minerals. Back in the day, the great masters used mineral-based paint which is why their works were so powerful. They had healing frequencies!
But, back to your question…I mix selenite and healing vortex soil with the acrylic paint and it makes the paint gritty, so when I swipe it onto the canvas, it makes a scratching noise that instantly makes me feel connected to the earth. As I layer colors, I use smudging spray on the paint to keep it wet and pure. With each layer, I sprinkle more mineral powders like blue apatite, aventurine, rose quartz, amethyst, and tholeiite on the wet paint and the weight of the powders creates what I think look like dried river beds on the canvas. I like to add more minerals in certain areas so viewers can connect with the frequencies of those stones.
How do you know when a painting is complete?
That is a question my husband asks me all the time. The only answer I can give is that the painting is final when it tells me that it is.
In your view, how can art make a positive impact on our lives?
As a society, we are still in the beginning stages of embracing energy healing as an important responsibility we have as humans. However major hospitals like MD Anderson and Mayo Clinic are now incorporating reiki, healing touch, and other energy healing modalities into their offerings.
This is a growing movement and one that I hope more artists incorporate into their work. Can you imagine how amazing the world would be if the art created and exhibited transmitted healing frequencies?
I would love to teach a class at art schools for students who want to learn how to create their healing art. Imagine standing in a healing art gallery, outdoor public exhibit or a museum filled with healing art, our hearts would be so full and we would take that out into the world and spread it. Like magic. It could transform everything just through the loving intentions of the artist.
What is next for you?
Healing House 2024! I’m so excited to continue hosting this event and providing a place for people to feel loved and honored. In the art world, a lot of curators talk about social responsibility and how artists are looked to during times of societal upheaval to make statements or ask questions. My art is a solution to societal upheaval. It gives collectors a place to heal themselves and the world. Healing House is where collectors can find the pieces that invite them inward to heal. It is also a space of complete wellness and high vibrations.
From the corridors of hospitals to the sanctuaries of art studios, Britt has etched a legacy that transcends conventional boundaries. As collectors and admirers engage with Britt's creations, they are not merely witnessing art but experiencing a healing journey. Britt Michaelian stands at the intersection of art and therapy, inviting us to explore the connection between creativity and the healing energies that reside within us.
