PHOTOGRAPHER RICARDO FISCHER
Today we speak to Ricardo Fischer, who currently lives and works in Berlin.
Capturing the right moment and telling stories through photography and film now determines my life. Stories that reflect my love for beauty, freedom and nature. I would describe my work as versatile, honest and authentic and my mission is to tell visually appealing and authentic stories. When I'm not photographing, I study philosophy and ethics at Humboldt University Berlin.
Tell us about your greatest inspirations or influences
My inspirations and influences are very diverse from new to old photographs, to films, works of art in a museum, etc. Sometimes I just go out into nature or sit in a busy part of town and watch what's going on around me and get inspired by it. I've often had moments when I read a book and then came up with certain motives or processes that I would like to implement or explore in my work.
A great source of inspiration for me are the works of Caspar David Friedrich or the photographs of Joel Meyerowitz or William Eggleston. In film area Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Greig Fraser and Hoyte van Hoytema. Overall, it’s life that inspires me, cliche as it may sound. I love to face new challenges and try new things.
How do the current trends in innovation and technology affect your creativity?
Of course, it plays a role in my work but I don't follow every trend that comes out. When it comes to photographic equipment, if there is something that is going to make my work process easier or more efficient, then I open to new things that suit my style and quality of work. I think it's very important to resist "faster, higher, further, more..." that pace is not sustainable.
We’d love to hear more about your creative process.
Well it depends on whether it is an assignment, a personal project or if i’m just out and about taking photos. If i’m working on a commission then I take notes during my meeting with my client or I storyboard. I love the little details so sometimes it can take me a few hours to set up,
When I photograph for myself I try not to think about it too much so the process is more natural. Sometimes the most creative results happen this way.
What do you think of the art world and how it works in general and how its’ continuously changing.
Social Media plays a major role here and contributes (both positively and negatively) to the fact that one is sometimes forced to reinvent oneself, to break new ground or generally to open oneself up to new things. In photography, analog style of photography has become very trendy especially among younger people. So it’s kind of a paradox when you think of the technical possibilities that exist today and what you can do with a camera, and how "suddenly" analogue photography is now a trend.
NFTs now are popular currently and personally I’m not a big fan. It is however going to change the art world and the way things are sold or published. A lot of people are using this to make a quick buck instead of the quality of the art form itself.
Anything coming up that we should know about?
Eventually I plan on publishing a photography book of my work. I love to write as well so that will play an important role as well not just the visuals. I’m also going to focus on the sale of my prints, so both things are very exciting.
What does wellbeing mean to you and anything in particular that you practice?
Well-being is of course very important to me and ultimately affects my photography. Whether physically or mentally, there are days when I realize that I just need a break, be it from photography and everything around it. Taking time off from a project has benefits and has a positive effect not only on how I feel but in my work. Physically I also prioritize taking care of my body and health; whether it's rowing, stand-up paddling or kenjutsu, To escape the stressful everyday life that comes with living in a big city like Berlin, I go hiking with my dog.
