ARTIST SARA CWYNAR

In May 2022 artist Sara Cwynar will be the next artist in residence at HORIZON, a new foundation in Los Angeles. Her residency follows HORIZON’s inaugural artist-in-residence Laurie Kang and also comes after Cwynar’s solo exhibition at ICA LA.

About Sara Cwynar

Born 1985, Vancouver, BC, Canada. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Sara Cwynar has exhibited at MoMA, MoMA PS1 and Foxy Production, New York, NY; Remai Modern, Saskatoon, SK, Canada; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Milwaukee Museum of Art, Milwaukee, WI; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; Oakville Galleries, Oakville, ON, Canada; 33rd Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany; and Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Sweden. The artist is represented by Foxy Production in New York, the Approach in London, and Cooper Cole in Toronto.

Recognised for her reflections on contemporary image culture, Cwynar works in photography and video to examine the circulation of images in the 21st Century and explore power structures embedded in everyday objects. Cwynar’s photographic works often take the form of sculptural constructions that are photographed, printed, tiled, and re-photographed as new images. Similarly, the artist’s videos combine existing images from photographic history with those held in her personal archive to re-present familiar imagery. Her practice interprets and reflects on shared visual codes of popular culture, while also offering commentary on capitalism and the rise of consumer culture.

Cwynar will spend two months at HORIZON, where she will explore, create, and expand her creative practice within the Foundation’s sun-lit studio based in Downtown Los Angeles. The residency will offer Cwynar an opportunity to further explore themes of pop culture, image, and consumerism, all within the very heart of the US entertainment industry.

HORIZON provides a platform for unprecedented creative experimentation where artists are invited to test the boundaries of artmaking. The program began in February, with Kang joining as the first artist-in-residence, and it is designed to empower and cultivate the careers of artists whose work exemplifies exciting, future directions in art and contemporary culture. Hosted in HORIZON’s 4,800 square foot studio in Downtown Los Angeles, the residency provides the selected artists an opportunity to cultivate their creative practices, while also immersing themselves in the creative life of Los Angeles.

The 2022 artists have been selected by Chief Artistic Director Christopher Y. Lew together with curators Wassan Al-Khudhairi (Chief Curator, Contemporary Art Museum St Louis), and María Elena Ortiz (Curator, Perez Museum), who serve on HORIZON’s 2021–22 Advisory Board.
