FILM MAKER AND PHOTOGRAPHER JACK MUNSCH
I’m a filmmaker and photographer based near London. I’ve dabbled in many fields but working closely with music artists seems to be a place I always come back to and that’s where I am at the moment along with working on personal projects. I also became a father near the beginning of 2020 which has been a complete whirlwind.
Your greatest inspirations Jack?
I know it’s a popular answer but music is always one of the biggest sources of Inspiration. When I hear it, I see visuals which inspires my work.
Photographically, there are too many to count but one of my first inspirations was Joel Meyerowitz. He is a street photographer who became known for his work creating large format landscape photos in Cade Cod. I love that he was able to cross different styles and never felt like he had to specialise. It’s something that I remind myself of regularly when I tell myself I need to stick to one genre.
Tell us a bit about your creative process?
My creative process isn’t really anything new. When inspiration strikes I usually try to write it down. I have a Page of notes on my iPhone I’ve kept since 2010 and has anything from music video ideas to photo projects. A lot of the ideas never come of anything but you one of them may inform another and create something else. However, for me the most important part of any creative journey is just starting it.
In terms of what I am looking forward to this year, spending time with the people I care about the most and acting upon some of the photographic practices I’ve been studying and wanting to dive into over the last year. 2022 seems to be filling up quickly with travel and longer projects so I’m excited and ready for new adventures.
How has this year changed your creativity or how you see the world changing moving forward?
Oh, this year has changed me in a big way creatively. It is more of an understanding of the type of work I want to make which came through studying and re-educating myself with the work of older photographers. For a while I created, like many people do, because they think it’s what they should make to share on social media but some of my favourite photos or videos have come from an organic moment. This is what I am trying to work towards now. More real work with intent that will live beyond the internet.
Who do you consider to be an icon of our time?
Mothers
What does wellbeing mean to you?
Good health, good relationships and good work keeps my being well. Those 3 things are difficult to obtain and harder to keep but I count myself lucky to have them in my life.
