ARTIST JASMINE KROEZE

PINCH AND PUNCH

I'm an artist and designer, living ocean-side in Papamoa Beach, New Zealand.
I’m a detail-obsessed, chocolate devouring plant killer. A mess maker, negotiator and all about the grey-area kinda girl. My happy place is creating art. My current work is focused on original artwork and large scale murals.

Greatest inspirations or influences?

I'm inspired by nature, music and fellow artists. My background is in fashion and textile design which has had a huge influence on my art.

Tell us a bit about your creative process?

For the initial concept, I use the same process I do for murals and textile design: I do a mini paper cut out collage with hand drawn elements. Then bring it into Illustrator to play with composition, scale, colour, balance etc. If I’m then translating to my original art, I will sketch the shapes onto my board or canvas.

Things you are looking forward to this year?

I am working on some really exciting commissions. In particular a three -piece series for an interiors company-they’ve given me so much creative freedom which is a dream.

How has this year changed your creativity or how you see the world changing moving forward?

I've never felt as much creative flow and confidence in my own work as I have this year. I've really embraced my own style and stopped comparing my work to others I admire. Emulating others is useful at the beginning to learn techniques, but now that I have created my own language in art I just can't stop painting!

I think over the past year our perspectives have shifted. I believe we value our own community more and place a greater importance on valuing our families, friends and health.

Do you think the art world needs to change, and if so how do you feel it can improve?

It's been interesting to see the art world boom as people are spending more time in their own spaces due to the Covid 19 pandemic and really investing into injecting their homes with more beauty and personality. I am excited to see art being more inclusive and embracing diversity.

What does wellbeing mean to you?

Freedom to create, speak, think.
