MATCH ARE EAGER TO PLAY ON STAGE AGAIN
Interview with doris oppenlander singer of the Indie- Electro band MATCH
MATCH can be compared to the sounds and style crossroads of Justice and Muse, with a voice borrowed soul of Kate Bush and Beth Ditto. Today is Music Monday and I am really excited to share the band’s new EP and video clip “ Salvation Journey”.
Our last release "Superficial Please", each song is unique. There's four stories revolving around the notion of hyper-connexion. It's just life as we see it from our window, each character belongs to a different gender and generation. inspiration lies in the show « Black Mirror » The main purpose is to point a finger at the hyper-connexion of today's world, and at how fast everything is going.
how did match begin?
The whole project started in "Tours" by the end of 2016. Tom, Thomas (A friend who was playing the bass with us at the time) and I had been trying to find a drummer for a while. Lucas and I met at the music school we were studying in, he was a friend of a friend of a friend. We had a drink and jammed for a little while, and something clicked. It happened right away. He joined the crew and then... Match was born!
Greatest inspirations or influences
We all listen to very different kinds of music. Lucas (The drummer) is a huge punk and hardcore fan. Tom (Guitars) and I (Singer), we're more into EDM and Indie brit-rock/pop, and last but not least, Anto (Bass player since 2020) is into Synthwave, soul and alt-pop music...
It's the mix of all these styles that makes MATCH sound the way it does today. Everybody's bringing different things, styles and inspirations when we're composing. When someone asks "What kinda music u doin mate?", after a 20sec silent internal struggle, we usually end up self-describing as an Indie Pop-Rock-Electronic band, something between Justice and Muse.
tell us about the creative process.
Usually we start with a melody, then we move it around over and over again. We're basically in quarantine in our home-studio, trying stuff, erasing, re-recording, until we end up with something everyone likes. Sometimes a song can change dramatically: "Young Cyber" didn't originally sound the way it does today at all. Once we're all satisfied with what we've created, we go knocking on our favorite recording studio's door. A couple months later, you get to hold the CD in your hands!
How do you feel about the current situation and how the music industry will change moving forward.
Well, it was quite unexpected but i think we handled it pretty well. As a young band it's an important experience; we had time to do tons of things we didn't before. We used that "forced pause" to compose and find inspiration in places we didn't before. We're so eager to play on stage !
