Everything She Does Is Magic
Interview with Julieta Barrionuevo
Everyone we interview are people we find amazing and inspiring, some times we know them personally other times we select them based on their work and in this case, my interview with Julieta Barrionuevo is a personal one. Julieta is a dear friend who inspires me with her energy, passion, and lust for life. Everything she does is done big and with great love. I haven’t met someone with so much energy and drive to create and love life. She is an art director, flamenco dancer, painter, photographer, tarot card reader, amazing friend and a restless entrepreneur full of ideas. Originally from Argentina, she studied in New York and moved to Madrid because she loves the colour of the sky and light of the city.
Tell us about yourself Julieta.
When I was about to finish my studies back at home in Argentina, I was already working as a freelance photographer in the fashion industry but I felt it was time to give my professional life a little twist, and something new. Wanting a challenge, I founded with two architects as partners, an interdisciplinary studio called Machimbre. We focused on creating intangible value in: architecture, interior design, art direction, and photography. The goal was to ensure a dynamic experience every day. One day we'd spend designing a chair, another developing a complete production set for a fashion shoot, and so on. We won awards, exhibited at Maison et Objet and our chair was selected as the best in design by Monocle magazine. It was incredibly rewarding and exciting times for my partners and I, but eventually I decided to challenge myself again and decided to leave my country, my friends, my family in my quest for adventure and knowledge.
I moved to Madrid in 2017 and created a studio called JUUBRN. We work in real estate projects, space design and project management for restaurants, residential and commercial spaces. Our nest is in Chueca and we just love being not only in the center but part of this exciting creative pulse happening in Madrid.
Your greatest inspirations or influences?
In both life and work, what inspires me the most is the sense of discovery. The challenge to grow from my soul. The process of nourishing it by opening my heart constantly to new experiences.
Tell us how tu alma flamenca " gypsy soul" has inspired you?
I've always had this deep need to express myself through music and dance, ( the language of the soul). Although I was born in Argentina, I have Italian, French and Spanish roots, so once I moved to Madrid, I felt the need to connect to my gypsy soul. I am so fortunate to have an incredible Flamenco mentor, Cristian, who has helped me develop and interpret this dance as a personal form of expression.
What would be a dream project for you?
Honestly this is very difficult to answer because there are just so many! I guess my response is to be able to materialize concepts you want to make happen. Right now I am working on an incredible collaboration in bringing design treasures from Argentina to Spain. It was something I just thought about last year and I am so excited in making it actually happen. Also JUUBRN is the project manager for the launch of an established restaurant in Argentina, here in Spain called Fayer which we are VERY excited about.
