Sounds Visuals Feelings; An Interview With Ilan Duhne
Walk Talk Hear Feel Interview with Ilan Duhne
I was born in the center of Mexico City in the 90’s, raised in a house that would never miss a sunday morning with the smell of freshly brewed coffee and a mix of Beatles, Elton John and Pink Floyd’s greatest hits playing. My studies in audio production & sound engineering started pretty early on and it was in 2015 I decided to leave home and go on one of my biggest life adventures. First stop was Berlin, and I’ll never forget the image of “Görlitzer Bahnhof” metro station at 8:00am on a rainy day. Anyone who’s lived in this incredible city will understand that there are no words to explain the experience, the amazing people, art, history, and culture. Now I am based and working in Madrid. This city has opened the doors to many interesting and creative projects including theatre projects, films and am now working on the sound design and sound editing for “Porträt fur Frau. K”, written and directed by a good friend of mine: Julien Hoogstede, a german Sci-fi drama feature rolled in Hamburg last year. I have lots of film projects coming up but am always exploring my creativity, exploring different technologies and hoping to continue collaborating with talent around the world.
Greatest inspirations or influences?
I like to think that my inspiration comes from everyday experiences and moments. All kinds of art forms; short films, feature films, exhibitions etc. There are so many, I am really influenced by Ryoichi Kurokawa, a Japanese artist that makes impressive audiovisual installations.
Challenges and joys of the creative world and in particular Sound Engineering?
Technology is evolving more and more every year, incredible things can be done nowadays with image and sound. We have to take the best of what tech can offer us in any case to help us push creativity further.
Tell us about your photography
IMAGES THAT SOUND. This describes the sensation I have every time I take a photo and every time I look back at it. Let me explain, this winter I traveled to the north of Italy and Slovenia, a beautiful area surrounded by Balkan culture, mountains, the beautiful Adriatic coasts, castles etc. But we should never forget what these areas have experienced in the past decades. Conflicts, wars,SFR Yugoslava’s breakup just 30 years ago, etc. Every cause has an effect, action/reaction and there’s no good without bad or vice versa, this area experienced an interchange of cultures that have transpired in the architecture, gastronomy, music, and language. My pictures are moments that impact myself in that exact moment, when you're walking in a certain place and you get that feeling of loneliness, but also of knowing that at some point where you're standing there was an incredible movement, people, feeling, thinking, struggling and achieving. A big part of my job is to take that sound, that part of my imagination, that exact feeling and put it into sound design.
How do you think the world is changing in this coming decade?
Massive emigrations, the planet is changing, some places are becoming extremely difficult to live in while others are always getting better. We’re in constant evolution and we should embrace it.
Anything else?
I would like to encourage everyone to take risks, push hard, share and enjoy life. Please, let’s do our best to take care of our planet.
