SEOUL BASED PHOTOGRAPHER ALEX FINCH
INTERVIEW WITH FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER ALEX FINCH
Alex Finch is a British Photographer based in Seoul, known mostly for his street style visuals and insane collaborations. He’s shot with Vogue, Dior, Farfetch, HypeBeast to name a few, and we caught up with him to ask him a few questions on his inspirations etc.
Greatest Inspirations or Influences?
I didn’t really get into photography by following someone and thinking that I wanted to do the same but I was definitely more influenced by the other Koreans around me that were shooting at the time. Also, the typical (and really famous) Streetstyle photographers that attend each and every fashion week are regulars on my feed.
When did you move to Seoul?
It has now been 12 years and after about 5, I knew I wasn’t likely to go back.
Memorable shoots so far?
Working with Irene Kim for Stella McCartney and the first time I covered Seoul Fashion Week for Vogue U.S .were both pretty landmark moments for me.
How do you describe your visual identity Alex?
I always feel like a cop out for not being able to answer this kind of question but I’ll say uncomplicated as I follow nearly the same procedure for all my shoots haha.
Challenges of the industry?
Getting noticed. It’s a saturated market and people tend to stick to what they like (goes for clients too). I’m always amazed at the work I see on Instagram and VSCO and it’s often from people I’ve never heard of before.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I always tell people not to be afraid of shooting whatever they enjoy shooting. Don’t worry too much about trying to appeal to a broad audience. It’s much more valuable to really focus on getting good at whatever it is you enjoy.
