DONIELLA DAVY A MAKE UP ARTIST'S ODE TO GEN Z
The last time I was this shocked watching a tv show or film , was a long time ago the first time I saw Larry Clark’s film Kids, but HBO’s Euphoria has everyone talking and questioning “ are the kids alright?”
This post however is a look into the creativity of the show’s make up wizard, Doniella Davy, who is responsible for creating all the amazing looks that are just a much a character in each episode and so central to the beauty shot in each frame of the show. Each look she creates, helps audiences understand the characters on a much deeper level . For example, Jules's looks are artsy and experimental, and are supposed to make us the viewers evaluate the way we view masculinity vs. femininity. Doniella says this “Euphoria” style of make up, already existed on Instagram.
” I’ve admired the freedom of expression that it inspires and I put my own twist on it as a designer, but really, this is my ode to what Gen Z is doing right now.”- Davy
In my favourite scene so far where, Rue and Jules pop pills and stare at each other under a blanket, Davy calls the scene “the most inspiring to shoot”: Jules’s face is coated in gold glitter, while Rue is covered in glitter tears. Davy created what she calls a “galaxy effect” by covering Schafer’s face in shimmer foundation, followed by several types of loose glitter; for Rue’s tears, she mixed water and “a lot of gold glitter” and let the mixture slowly run down Zendaya’s face.

About Doniella
Born and raised by two artists in Venice, CA, Donni grew up immersed in visual art. She earned a BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating, she cold-called a well-established makeup artist in the film industry. Within several months, Donni had completed a crash-course in cinematic make-up techniques, and began a three month apprenticeship in the make-up department on a Michael Mann film shot in Hong Kong.
Her commitment to her ever-evolving craft, as well as her distinguished attention to detail, have quickly advanced her career. Other achievements so far: Under the Silver Lake starring Andrew Garfield, and Barry Jenkins’s If Beale Street Could Talk & Moonlight. Her work on Best Picture winner at the 2017 Academy Awards, Moonlight, was featured by Vogue magazine.
