Letters, Scissors and Movement Meet Erre Gálvez

Interview with multidisciplinary artist Erre Gálvez

I was born in a little town in the north of Alicante (Spain) but I am currently living and working in Madrid. I am a multidisciplinary designer. I am fascinated for art and strange objects since I was a child. I am super passionate for typography, printed ink and movement in any print media. In my work I create art using and mixing different materials like old magazines, books, typographies and even objects I randomly find.

My projects has been exhibited and published in different galleries, museums, brands and magazines around the world as Museo Cerralbo (Madrid), Museo del Romanticismo, Mustang Art Gallery, Cultura Inquieta, Camper and The Guardian New York.

I spend my life walking between graphic design and the edge of my scissors. Or is it the other way around?

Greatest inspirations or influences?

  • I love photography since I was a child. I really appreciate and value photographers who have a special vision like Jim Goldberg, Juanan Rquena.

  • Also, I am very inspired by old print media because I love textures and old ink colors for example 1940's magazines.

Challenges of the art world in your opinion?

My work is 100% analogue because I spend so many hours working in front of a screen as a graphic designer and I need to switch off and create with no more artificial lights or pixels but when I finish a work I need to scan it and obviously need technology. We need to learn how to use technology better, but yes sometimes I do find it strange how people create art with computers. I prefer analogue media.

Other creatives you love?

  • I love creativity in general. I am really interested in Letterpress, Risograph and other printed technics to mix with my collages. Also Photography. Advertising, Typography... I also visit flea markets to find objects and magazines, these places are very very inspiring to me.

  • I usually visit some blogs of art and design like Booooooom, Mindsparklemag or Its nice that but always Instagram because there is just so much inspiration to find in this platform!

Something exciting about 2020?

I have an art in a show in January in a very special place in Madrid so I am extremely excited and happy about this. Also, I am working on new illustrations for a new branding book, probably a special workshop with a Spanish shoe brand and an exhibition so a lot to look forward to!

Most interesting response you've heard regarding your work so far?

In my last exhibition in La Fabrica (Madrid), when I collected the artworks I spoke to the staff there, and they told me how much the exhibition was loved by the people. Hearing this was so comforting.
