ARTSCENE
Alexander Charriol was Born in Honolulu, Hawaii to French parents and raised on three continents. He first found his love for painting during high school in London. His passion led to his first solo exhibition at Sydney Muse in 1995. He continued his formal arts education at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and then moved onto the New School in New York City.
Charriol has since been exhibited and collected by some of the most prestigious art galleries and museums around the world including LHTM Gallery, the Ayala Museum in the Philippines, the Yoshii Gallery of Paris and Japan, and Artspace in Dubai. In 2010, Alexander hosted his first pop-up Human Flow Project exhibition, a drawing marathon in NY, which will continue to tour in Hong Kong, Bangkok, the Philippines, and Los Angeles. His most recent inspiration that has come to life is his contemporary artist-led fashion brand, Artscene.
When Alexander isn’t painting or poking and provoking, he can be found cooking bolognese for friends at home or studying mindfulness practices for the soul and body. He also encouraged me to quit smoking and I will be forever grateful.
Alex why did you start Artscene?
I started Artscene because i wanted to spread the message of art and wanted to educate the public on art and artists that shape our world. I want people to feel included and not excluded from the art world, and create a community where people from all walks of life can talk about art and share their creative ideas.
What is Artscene exactly?
Artscene is a contemporary artist led brand generating the finest wearable art printed t shirts that encourage everyone to explore their inner creative energy. The t shirts speak a mobile language of design, surprise and shock reflecting on the history of art, blended with pop culture references. The tees are exclusively designed for the brand created in collection by artist for artists, lovers, dreamers, and activists alike.
The movement is only beginning.
Release the artist within.
Alex your greatest inspirations or influences?
Entering the studio of another artist, I get so inspired to see how they work and what kind of materials they use and the process they go through to create their magic. I love to soak in that energy and honestly there's nothing like it. I just want to run to my studio and start painting.
Some of my favourite influences as a painter would be:
Basquiat, Georg Baselitz,
Franz Kline, Robert Rauschenberg
and of course Henri Matisse and those colors
