LES CONTRADICTIONS DE LA VIE
Les Contradictions De La Vie byCheikhou Ba
Geneva based, Senegalese artist Cheikhou Ba returned to Dubai's Mojo Gallery for a solo show that examined the perceptions, attitudes and ambiguities that inform and shape the 'human condition'.
Cheikhou questioned 'how to be a better person?' and how this daily aspiration sometimes challenges our perceived freedom andindependence. Ba uses powerful sculptural work and vibrant colorsand a memorable, surreal center piece made up of white eggs, (taking the artist months to mold) representing how we walk on egg shells throughout our lives.
Greatest Inspirations or Influences?
My inspirations come from my daily life. Not necessarily from anything that has a direct link to art. I could be influenced by a piece of music, a beautiful dress, an ambiance, a museum visit or a gallery or a work of art I might discover online. Favorite blogs, publications or websites? I don't have any favourite blogs or publications, even if I see many. I don't try to memorize them. But I do bookmark often so I can come back for a look from time to time.
One of your favorite memories?
I will always remember my first show in Dakar in 2004. It was in a prestigious space where I always dreamt of having a show when I was an art student. Anything else you'd like to share? I feel there's a growing positive vibe in the air around what's happening at the Mojo Gallery, the exhibitionsshow and the dynamism of the people who run it. One would only hope that this continues to go forward so that art, no matter where it comes from, can find the place it deserves where it is most radiant for the benefit of all.
