SKYLAR FEIN

SKYLAR FEIN

Last week I attended C24 Gallery's opening for New Orleans-based artist Skylar Fein ( born 1968)- on view until October 27th.  The artist’s first solo gallery exhibition in New York includes a series of politically inspired works s and lots of collages/prints taken from mainstream culture. My personal favorite are a series of paintings based on memorabilia from the American punk scene of the 70-80's that address topics such as fascism, sex and boredom, which the artist likens to “Suprematism on poppers.” More on the Artist

Skylar Fein creates two- and three-dimensional works from materials found on the streets of New Orleans, as well as from sources like comic books and mass-produced commodities such as bulletproof glass. Fein first gained acclaim at the Dan Cameron curated inaugural Prospect.1 Biennial, New Orleans, with his installation, Remember the Upstairs Lounge, a multimedia piece about a fatal 1973 New Orleans fire at a gay bar that killed thirty-two and injured dozens. Fein has been reviewed in numerous publications including Artforum, Art in America, The Houston Chronicle, The New York Times Style Magazine, The New Yorker, and ARTNews. C24 Gallery
