FRANCK VINCHON INTERVIEW
I was recently interviewed by author, communication/advertising strategist and editor at Unleash magazine Franck Vinchon. Originally from Paris, this creative jack of all trades has lived in London, Madrid and the past six years in Moscow. He is also a musician who has composed for several films in Spain, a screen writer, (his sixth short film is currently in development) and published his first book "Tranches de Mort" last year.
Franck also created Ipeka, an art collective that aims to support, help and connect young talent over the world and is quite involved in the development of digital startups in Russia...does he ever sleep?
Greatest inspirations or influences
David Bowie, Oscar Wilde, Eddie Vedder, Michel Houellebecq, Chris Cornell, Gaspar Noe, Charles Bukowsky, Mike Patton, Brett Eston Ellis, Tim Burton, Chuck Palaniuhk, Rimbaud, Christopher Nolan and my dog. I'm afraid I have forgotten thousands of other names. The main inspiration is life, life will always overcome fiction and this is my creative approach.
What is your book "Tranches de mort"about?
'Tranches de mort' (Slices of death) is a short story collection about...life.
It's a celebration of life through the statement that we are all going to die. Awkward, I know. I'm just explaining that you'll die the way you live. It means that you have to follow what you believe in or what you stand for as death is the most important moment of your life (even if it's about obsession, crazy decisions or desperate dreams). In the book, you can find all sort of characters like an IT guy obssessed by the numbers 0 and 1, an old Hollywood horror movie extra that wants to be a vampire, a guy that decides to suicide by drowning himself in his bathroom, a torero experiencing his worst corrida of his life...All the stories are fictional but deeply related to me...somehow.
What is My Own Epitaph?
With some friends, we launched an application to give people a sneak peak at the motivation behind the writing of this unexpected book of short stories. The book features some iconic characters whose stories demonstrate that death is not just an accident but a fair result of everything you experienced in your life. That's why the Facebook app ‘My Own Epitaph’ generates your epitaph, using some information from your fb profile, putting all those slices of life to use. The result - some crazy and cynical epitaphs that will get you thinking and smiling.
Favorite websites, blogs, publications
I like to lose myself on the net and I'm not very loyal apart from the news and sports portals. For publications I am still loyal to Dazed and Confused, Wired, Technikart, Harvard Business Review, les Inrockuptibles, So Foot
Upcoming projects you are working on?
I've started a new book that will touch the subject of expatriation...and I can tell you that in Russia, the subject is rich and most of the times corrosive. Most of the expats here are mostly disapointing but you'll have to read the book to get the fun out of it. I'm developing my short film that may be ready this summer. And I continue to observe life and see what would be interesting to create out of it. My brain never stops.
