TOMAS LOEWY BURNING MAN
Excited to share our Interview with photographer Tomas Loewy who takes some of our favourite shots at Burning Man.
Greatest inspirations or influences Tomas?
America. the concept of America. Freedom to be whoever you want to be. the ideals of America (not the day to day realities, which would be very shackling and diminishing), but the thought of incorporating the 'pursuit of happiness' in a constitution always fascinated me.
Oh, you might have asked for people? Cartier-Breson, for the feeling of spontaneity in his images.
Highlights from this years Burning Man?
Temple of Transition. The best temple in the 8 years i've been going. Both as a 'building' and the atmosphere it delivered. The artwork with the white umbrellas; in a shocking way the sight of a tourist bus (yes, a tourist bus, with a Vegas phone number on it,) driving across the playa. I thought WTF...
The amazing human powered charon (by Peter Hudson), the gondolier to the afterlife, whose rowing skeletons made you think about your own mortality. and made for some amazing photography, as did the LOVE art work
as always since it has been on the playa for four years now the Balloon Chain (by Robert Bose). I love the simplicity of flowing and floating balloons.
the daily sunrise parties with Robot Heart.
Upcoming projects you want to share with our audience?
This was year two of three years of filming at BM for my film 'Radical Burning Desert' (by 'coincidence' the same title as my burning man book, published this year; find it on facebook. We are filming on RED cameras to make a 90 minute non-verbal art documentary film (continuing the tradition of non-verbal masterpieces such as Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka and now Samsara) based on Burning Man imagery captured during a three year period, 2010 to 2012.
It will be released in 2013. It is a captivating visual essay, a visual meditation on the elements of Burning Man, showcasing the spirit of life in the unique universe that is Burning Man and how this inspires the lives of burners.

Because he just died (and trust me I am the one photographer who does NOT use apple products except for the ipad, and is always on the windows pragmatic side of life) I remembered the amazing speech Steve Jobs gave as a commencement speech at Stanford: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc
