HONEY WHIPPED
TONIGHT IN NEW YORK GET READY FOR SOME FUNK AND SOUL
Honey Whipped was formed in 2010 as a collaboration between Emma Zakarevicius, Singer of Psychedelic New York rock group Crazy Mary, and Cresta Kruger, electric/distortion flute player of the former New York Indie bands Kisser and 3K silk.
Looking to create a new, exciting sound and performance concept Emma and Cresta have worked to move away from traditional rock sounds focusing rather on creating a visceral sonic experience with electronic beats, textual soundscapes, soulful vocals and theatrical performance. In 2011 Honey Whipped saw the addition of internationally known beat boxer Kid Lucky, further enhancing the unique vision of the group. Honey Whipped is showcasing their new line-up at the Fortune Cookie Lounge TONIGHT followed by recording in the studio in early July to record their first EP.
Greatest inspirations or influences.
The members of Honey Whipped have an appreciation for all music types with each member bringing their own unique musical backgrounds and sensibilities to the table. Emma and Cresta, while loving and growing up with 70’s rock and roll, soul and funk, really wanted to do something different in this project, something ultimately relevant in today’s shifting music world. Contemporary artists such as Coco Rosie and Little Dragon as well as 90’s trip hop bands such as Massive Attack, Tricky, Everything But The Girl have inspired them towards creating sexy melodic grooves that make you want to move and croon.
How would you describe the music you guys create?
Honey Whipped can be described as a soul/funk, experimental dance music extravaganza.
Challenges of what you do?
One of the biggest challenges for Emma and Cresta was starting Honey Whipped while both were studying full time-- Emma in her second Masters degree in Media Studies at the New School and Cresta in Creative Writing Fiction program at Columbia University. In preparation for their debut show in 2010 both were grappling with mid-term papers and exams and still managed to set the stage on fire. While schools out for summer, the biggest challenge now seems to be how to redirect the spotlight onto female artists in a male driven industry.
