PHOTOGRAPHER MIYA MIZUNO

Seth Troxler Promo shot by Miya Mizuno

Miya Mizuno's work really caught my attention and am really proud and excited to share this interview with the creative photographer.

Miya Mizuno was born to a Japanese father and an Argentinian- English mother in Shibuya, Tokyo but moved to England when she was four years old. She returned to Tokyo last September for a change from her daily life in London so she turfed out of her comfort zone to gain a better understanding about  Japanese culture and traditions. She has been teaching English and says it has been the best way to understand the Japanese way of everyday life. Here she has also taken the time to beef up her portfolio and turn her passion for the camera into a career.

Greatest inspirations or influences?

  • Gregory Crewdson's cinematic 'Twilight' series, his artistic use of light always inspires me.

  • Garry Winogrand for his candid documentary street photographs, showing America in his own unique way in the 50's and 60's.

  • Rinko Kawauchi her photography style is very gentle. Colour, composition and simplicity are all apects she depicts beautifully.

  • Christian Als who won 3rd prize in 2009 for Best Photojournalism. Als went to China and photographed the coal miners in 2008 which brings me to the next question...

Tell us what a dream photo shoot looks like for you Miya.

I have wanted to go to China for some time now because even though the cities are expanding in size as China has the world's fastest growing major economy, the rural society occupy over half of the population-especially in the Northwest and Western areas.

There is a place called Yakushima which is on one of the most Southern islands of Japan where I want to do a shoot in the ancient forest there. You know the film Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki? The forest in the film was inspired by the thick forest of Yakushima, the forest is said to be sacred, there are trees there that are thousands of years old. I would love to do a magical, light inspired Crewdson shoot in amongst the trees, perhaps with my Father as the model, he is my very own wizard look a like.

I'd like to combine photography and travel, not in the sense of "travel photography" but my own personal projects intertwined. I want to see as many World Heritage Sites and The 7 Wonder's of the World as I can, traveling with my tiny light box, documenting as I go along, Cambodia is a place where I would love to begin this journey.

My dream shoot, would be to travel back in time to the 1950's - 70's and work along side Richard Avedon, he is one of my favourite portrait photographers of all time.

Favorite editorial shoots?

I love the shoot Rankin did in 125 Magazine's issue 15 "America".

Favorite websites.blogs. publications?

My favourite magazine for new up coming non commercial photographers (and also old ones) is 125 Magazine. They always seem to manage to show such individuality in every issue, not just with photography but art and fashion too.

Up and coming artists we should know about?

There is a guy I would like to introduce and his name is Dominic Clarke.

Anything else you’d like to share with our audience?

I don't believe in God, nor a higher supreme being.

I believe in aliens but I do not believe in parallel universes. I also don't believe that man went to the Moon. I like conspiracy theories. I used to want to be a scientist. I believe that life is all about experience, to take certain risks because life is short and you only life once.
