Rajinder Singh feels like he has been drawing and sketching forever.. or at least for as long as he can remember.
My work with high level maths which was as much creative as it was axiom-based kept me connected to my art. Today, in a kind of a role reversal, my art keeps me intimately involved with mathematics.
He has exhibited around the world through a conduit of major galleries in London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. In the past two years, he started working on a new dimension to his painting practice through installations and sculptures. His paintings can be seen at www.unprimed.com as well as www.causedefect.com. Highlights so far: An exhibition at Mendoza Argentina in a cellar of a major winery the size of two football pitches at the base of the incredible Los Andes amongst people that had a real appreciation for the arts.

- more recently Rachel Whiteread.
Most interesting show, installation or collaboration to date?
The show that took most out of me, the one that eventually inspired other work, the show that I had fun being part of was the 4/12 group show at the Institute of Contemporary Arts at LaSalle Singapore late last year. I built walls and broke them, I shifted two tons of sand into the gallery, it took one week and several thousand dollars to make, it left people perplexed but highly engaged with the demolition aesthetics. I hope it made them think…
“Dream” project for you?
I would love to work with Rachel Whiteread ( Turner prize winner with HOUSE from ’93) on a project in London. We both deal with the formless in our work. It would give me insight into her process and her thoughts. This I shall prize.
Upcoming projects we can look forward to?
I am now represented by Stephanie Hoppen Gallery in London. I am preparing for a solo here and one at Isabela Anchorena in Buenos Aires soon.
Interesting gallery spaces in the world?
Right now I am obsessed with the Tate Modern and the space where Gabriel Oroczo is presently showing. It is grand..
Favorite websites/blogs/publications?
I read the Art Forum and the Asia Art Pacific Mags. I go to several contemporary art websites. The websites I frequent to most are 3quarksdaily.com and notcot.org. Both amaze me everyday in some way or other.
Differences in the art world between the east and west ( since you currently live/work in London)?
This is a big question and there is no one answer to it. Of course style, material preferences and subject matter differ. But there is little that you can put your finger on right away as the incontrovertible difference. I have seen the world through my books, art, tv and travels. And so has everyone else around me, east and west. There are only fine subtle tones and grades of difference. London is a mature market where much has been explored and as the quintessential melting pot, it has chucked the words east and west out of the door. Here all influences conspire to make for the next cultural innovation.
