Guti

A child prodigy pianist who stormed Argentina's rock stadiums before conquering techno's darkest dancefloors. His story sounds like a tango remixed by Ricardo Villalobos.

Buenos Aires  ·  Berlin  ·  Barcelona Desolat  ·  Defected  ·  Rompecorazones Jazz  ·  Rock  ·  Techno

Some artists follow trends. Guti rewrites them. Born Gabriel Podliszewski in Argentina, he first dazzled as a jazz pianist of rare sensitivity before joining iconic Argentine rock bands Jovenes Pordioseros and Intoxicados: stadium tours, platinum records, the full arc of rock stardom. Then, in 2006, techno stole him away.

He plunged into electronic music, fusing jazz intuition and Latin roots with raw, jacking beats. Labels like Desolat (Loco Dice), Wolf + Lamb, and Supplement Facts became homes for his genre-defying EPs, while artists like Villalobos and Luciano spun his tracks into sunrise sets at DC-10. Rolling Stone called his sound "full of soul."

In 2008 he settled in Berlin, sharing a flat with a young Seth Troxler and Ryan Crosson. He spent weekends gigging hard, weeks working obsessively at his production skills, and built a reputation for collaboration, releasing with Dubshape, Ryan Crosson, and Shaun Reeves. His debut hit records followed: You've Got Me, Every Cow Has A Bird.

From Dusseldorf, where he immersed himself in the world of Desolat, came his first solo full-length Patio de Juegos (2011), put together with Loco Dice. From 2013 he based himself in Barcelona, building his dream recording studio with a grand piano at its heart, looking out across the city's skyline, where he wrote the jazz-infused Rompecorazones. More than an album, it was a statement: Guti the musician, not just Guti the dancefloor presence. He released it on his own label of the same name. It arrived to considerable critical acclaim.

"Techno didn't find me. I crashed into it. Jazz taught me freedom, rock taught me rebellion. Now I'm just chasing the electricity in the crowd's skin."

01

What are your greatest inspirations and influences?

Emotions, personal experiences. Love, feelings, and broken hearts. That is what drives everything.

02

Most memorable event so far?

Last weekend in Mamaia, Romania, was out of this world. We had a Desolat versus Cocoon party, with everyone on. Then after that I played with Sven Väth at the beach in the after-party for one hundred hours, with the Black Sea as a backdrop, with Dice and all my friends dancing. I was 50 hours awake. Just one party after the other, just friends and madness. It was amazing.

03

Other DJs and producers whose music you love?

I tour with Loco Dice all the time. He is a big influence for me: the way he manages to get people going. I am also touring with Marco Carola, and he is amazing. Both are dancefloor killers. Then I have my friends Seth Troxler and Shaun Reeves, who play amazing music in a completely different way. And I am currently working on music with Guy Gerber for Desolat. He is a truly exceptional talent.

04

Where are you performing this summer?

I am on permanent tour, and every week is an adventure. Big League in Ibiza for the first time. Cocoon Amnesia, DC-10, Space. It should be wild. Back to Moscow in two weeks, I love that city. And Sonar Festival. All around.

05

Favourite city in the world?

Tokyo, because it is just extraordinary. But also Buenos Aires, because it is my place in the world. My story is there.

06

How do you think the music industry is changing?

With technology you can make a song easily, or at least get the illusion of doing so. That makes some people think they are artists just by stacking loops on top of each other. That is completely wrong to me. So you have a million new producers and labels every day who have no understanding of music, no understanding of feelings. They just want to put a song out. The level goes down. Songs without soul. Fewer people buying original music. It makes it harder for the real songwriters to survive. But so is life. As always, the strongest and most talented will survive. And maybe that is a good thing too.

07

Anything else you would like to share?

I miss my dog.
